October 3, 2024MLC was awarded a place on Newsweek’s rankings of America’s Greatest Workplaces in 2024.
“When we survey our teams, we always hear that our culture and people are what make MLC a great place to work – so it’s wonderful to have this recognized externally,” said Kristine Schuster, vice president of human resources at MLC.
“The needs of the workforce are always evolving, so we are constantly investing in our HR programs and compensation to move the goalposts forward. Our objective is to drive an engaging culture where everyone can bring their real self to work, is rewarded for their contributions and has opportunities to develop in their career.”
MLC’s human resources department collaborates with its dedicated sustainability organization. Together, these teams measure workplace performance and set goals for continuous improvement.
Fiona Woody, director of sustainability and ESG, explained the theme for the social pillar of MLC’s ESG strategy: Protect and Engage.
“We protect people by promoting safety, health and mental wellbeing. We engage them by driving a culture based on teamwork, integrity and personal growth. We track a range of metrics to measure and improve our performance in these areas. We also anonymously survey our employees to pin down aspects that are hard to calculate, like sense of belonging and work-life balance.”
Areas that MLC actively measures workplace performance for its ‘Protect and Engage’ strategy include:
- Safety, including leading indicators for proactive management
- Diversity in leadership
- Amount invested in developing employee skillsets
- Pay equity
- Wellness program participation
- Charitable contributions
- Volunteer hours
- Employee engagement and survey responses
“At MLC, we think in very long time horizons,” Schuster said. “So while we celebrate where we are today and how we’ve grown as a company, we are also planning for how we can continue to be an engaging, rewarding place to work in 5, 20, 50 years from now.”
